Springfield Junction is the first DCC fitted layout at the club in 4mm scale, and was started in 2006. Having tried unsuccessfully for over a year to fit Megapoints electronic control boards for point control, we are currently retro-fitting using MERG point control systems. We are taking the opportunity to install a control panel, and hope to have an operational layout in the not too distant future.
Operating
It is operated in the usual roundy roundy fashion 22’ x 10’ with a fully scenic front, Springfield Mainline station, with a town scene over the station, Springfield Junction ( preserved station ). There are also an MPD, Container terminal, virtual quarry and wagon repair facility and an extensive fiddle yard to the rear. The layout is entirely DCC.
The fiddle yard entry and exit points are controlled by a diode matrix. Reed switches at the end of each storage line are activated by magnets fixed under each locomotive or multiple unit, so the trains select their own routes through the fiddle yard. With up to nine points needing to be set for each train movement, automation certainly helps! The operation of the fiddle yard has become a point of interest for viewers.
Track and points are all Peco, Code 75 on the scenic side and Code 100 in the fiddle yard.
